Who Was Jesus and Why Did He Come?
Lots of folks have lots of ideas about Jesus… many of them preconceived, many shaped by society and not by what is recorded about him, and many based on actual history.
I prefer to take that texts as they have been delivered down to us and to take Jesus at His word.
Early in His short 40 month ministry, He said the following, “And he said unto them, Let us go into the next towns, that I may preach there also: for therefore came I forth.” (Mark 1:38) He came to preach that the Kingdom of God was at hand and that people should repent and prepare for it. He did indeed also, while He went about preaching, show compassion to those He encountered and relieved their individual suffering (from sickness and demon possession) and He did so in order to show the world His Father’s loving heart. (No one has ever seen God; the only One who is God, who is at the Father’s side, he has made him known. (John 1:18, ESV)
After having done so for over 3 years, at the end of His life as He was pondering His soon arrest, beating, crucifixion, and death, He said, “ Now is my soul troubled; and what shall I say? Father, save me from this hour? but for this cause came I unto this hour.” (John 12:27)
Jesus came to earth to be killed. He came to earth to die for the transgressions of others – to pay the just penalty for the guilt of the sins of others.
So no matter how anyone tries to portray Him, if they are going to be true to history, they should not leave these two basic truths out of any analysis. Jesus came to preach the Kingdom of God and to die so people can access it.
